Hi everyone! Today’s character is 湖 hú, meaning lake. If you follow Heisig, it is character 156. Those three dots on the left hand side are three drops of water. It is the water radical, 水 shuǐ, in compressed or abbreviated form 氵
I have two versions of today’s sentence. The first is from Pleco, is longer and is probably the more elegant and literary of the two. The second is Google Translate’s interpretation of ‘a thick mist rises over the lake’ and is shorter and more economical. Let’s see if we can decipher them.
One part I’ve puzzled over today is yīdào – although it functions as a word meaning ‘together’, my best guess is that in this sentence it is a classifier word belonging to ‘river’, using the reasoning that rivers are similar to lakes. If you know better, please tell me.
