I’ve been looking for something new to stimulate my Chinese learning and this evening finds me avidly playing Ninchanese, a highly gamified application which you can use on the web or as an Android app. It caught my attention because someone mentioned that it teaches grammar, which not many apps do. This is important to me and I’m not going to complain about attractive graphic design and a few bells and whistles while I’m learning.

Alongside the app, Ninchanese has a very good blog with lots of tips for getting the most out of the learning experience. It also looks as though there’s a social aspect to it, including a live chat room, although I cannot tell how well populated it is.
Launched via kickstarter in 2014, Ninchanese received excellent reviews, with a particular focus on its success in delivering a comprehensive range of learning opportunities (listening, speaking, sentence building, etc, with the inclusion of grammar being particularly commended) and content which goes up to HSK 5. There are 3,500 lessons currently in the system.
